Welfare Bill ‘Only half a plan’ – More Emphasis on Jobs Needed

Pete Wishart has expressed his concern over UK Government plans to reform the welfare system as set out in the Welfare Reform Bill.
Commenting, Mr Wishart said:
“The Welfare Reform Bill contains a series of cuts which will hurt the poorest and most vulnerable in Scottish society. Getting people off benefits is a laudable aim, but just as important is getting people into work – and the measures to ensure that happens just aren’t in this Bill.
“What has been set out by the Government is only half a plan and there needs to be more emphasis on jobs and what happens once people have had their incapacity support withdrawn. Despite encouraging signs in Scotland, this is still a challenging time for anyone looking for employment and it is even harder if you have been out of the workforce for a long period of time due to illness or disability.”
