Pete Wishart has welcomed the news that the UHI Millennium Institute, including Perth College, has officially become the University of the Highlands and Islands following formal consent from the Privy Council to UHI Millennium Institute to use the title University of the Highlands and Islands.
Mr Wishart said:
“Many congratulations to everyone who has been involved in bringing this fantastic project to fruition.
“This is a day of celebration for all who are connected with the UHI and I am delighted to add my voice to the congratulations.
“Perth College is the southernmost component of UHI and the city of Perth is proud that it now has a university and is part of this exciting and innovative development in academic provision in Scotland.
“I have long supported the concept of a collegiate university based on institutions spread throughout the Highlands and Islands so it is a real pleasure for me to see that becoming a reality.
“Even more so because Perth College is an important part of this great venture and I am confident that this will be good news for the local economy.
“Of course, this also means that the Fair City now has a university to add to its Cathedral and historic documents as part of the trappings befitting a city. All that is missing now is the official stamp of approval which I will be continuing to press the Westminster Government to provide.”
