WISHART HOLDS EXPENSES MEETING

Perth and North Perthshire MP, Mr Pete Wishart, last night [Thursday] held a public meeting in Perth to discuss all issues concerning MPs' expenses .

Speaking following the meeting, Mr Wishart said:

“I held a public meeting because I felt it was important that my constituents had the opportunity to question me over expenses and to raise any general issues about the whole expenses regime. I am grateful to the members of pubic who came along last night.

"MPs' expenses continue to dominate the news agenda and I know that there is growing anger and outrage about what some MPs have claimed. I explained my own situation where I don’t own any London property, claim for no household furnishings and pay for most of my own utility bills and council tax from my own pocket. Everyone at the meeting was satisfied with what I had claimed and I am grateful for my constituents' support.

"The meeting, however, did recognise the deficiencies of the expenses regime and I will now take forward some of the points made, particularly in respect of MPs owning property and the total transparency of all receipts.

"I was also able to tell my constituents that all my receipts will be published on a quarterly basis and I will continue to invite the people of Perth and North Perthshire to scrutinise what I claim.”
