PERTH POLITICIANS WELCOME RECORD NUMBER OF POLICE OFFICERS IN TAYSIDE

Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth and North Tayside and Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for the Perth constituency have today (Tuesday) welcomed the publication of statistics which show that there are now a record 17,038 full-time equivalent police officers in Scotland, including an additional 17 in Tayside over the last 3 months.

Ms Cunningham said:

"These extra police officers delivered by the Scottish Government are ensuring that our homes, businesses and streets are safer places.

"We now have an extra 43 police officers in Tayside providing a visible, reassuring presence on our streets and working to create safer communities.

"We promised in our manifesto of 2007 that we would put more bobbies on the beat, that is exactly what the Scottish Government has done. We not only 827 have more police officers throughout Scotland but they are being deployed more efficiently and effectively to protect and reassure our communities.

"These figures show we are well on our way to deliver on our commitment to have an extra 1000 officers by March 2011."

Mr Wishart continued:

"The situation in Scotland is in stark contrast to the experience south of the border where the Police Federation of England & Wales have called for 2,000 extra police officers due to cut backs by local police authorities.

"With this record number of police on our streets we have made real progress in boosting police numbers in Tayside across Scotland."
