WISHART MEETS VICTIM SUPPORT
Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth and North Perthshire paid a visit to Victim Support at their Perth offices, The Gateway, North Methven Street, Perth, today (Friday).
Speaking following his visit, Mr Wishart said:
"It was very useful indeed to meet with Victim Support and to learn more about the excellent work that they do both in practical terms, working with the victims of crime and in campaigning for the rights and needs of those who have been directly affected by crime.
"Like so many organisations, a great deal of their work depends on the time and energy freely given by a team of volunteers, public-spirited people without whose input and involvement our society would be very much the poorer.
"I know that my colleagues in the Scottish Government are committed to helping victims of crime and small steps such as ensuring that the families of murder victims no longer have to meet the costs of cleaning a home in which a homicide has been committed, are indications of that commitment.
"The Victim Statement Scheme which was rolled out across all of Scotland's courts earlier this year after a successful pilot period allows the victims' voice to be heard within the justice system.
"And the forthcoming Criminal Justice & Licensing Bill will contain measures to provide greater support for victims of crime - as well as helping police prevent and combat criminal activities.
"This week's news that police numbers are at an all time high is also good news both in terms of helping to drive down crime and so lessen the chances of actually becoming the victim of crime but also because more police on the street allows people to feel safer in their homes, streets and communities and that can be a big help to those trying to overcome the effects of being a victim of crime."
