WISHART WELCOMES AVIVA HALF YEAR REPORT

Member of Parliament for Perth and North Perthshire, Mr Pete Wishart, has today [Thursday] welcomed Aviva’s half year report, which shows a £747 million profit and an increasing position of strength.

Commenting on the report Mr Wishart said:

“It is, without a doubt, an extremely difficult time for a financial services organisation to return a profit. Highly volatile financial markets in the first quarter and new lows in consumer confidence in the real economy are challenging for all businesses. It is therefore, extremely good news that a business like Aviva, that has such investment in this constituency, has had such promising half year report.

“These Aviva figures show an improvement in pensions, as well as showing that insurance targets have actually been beaten.

“I hope that Aviva can build on this position of comparative strength and expand its facilities and workforce in Perth. The company currently employs nearly 1600 members of staff in Perth, a number that has more than doubled since the 1998 merger between General Accident and Commercial Union.

"Historically, the insurance industry has always been important to the Fair City, but today’s figure highlight that our local heritage is still very much alive today.

“Aviva is the largest insurance provider in the UK, the 5th largest in the world, with a vast annual turnover globally. Aviva is a massively important part of the local Perthshire economy and they put a lot back in to the community, working with schools and raising money for charity.

“I would like to congratulate all staff at Aviva in Perth for their part in these excellent half year figures and wish all the best for the rest of the year.”
