LOCAL MP TO OPEN ALYTH ENERGY FAIR

ALYTH “SETTING AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE”

Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth and North Perthshire will be opening the Alyth Energy Fair in his constituency tomorrow, Saturday 28 August, at 10.00am in the Airlie St Hall, Alyth.

Organised by the Alyth Environmental Group (AEG) - a volunteer community group, established in 2000 to help improve the aesthetic, recreational and environmental aspects of the town for the whole community - the Alyth Climate Action Town (ACAT) initiative first began in 2005, and a similar energy fair was held in the Airlie Street Hall in May 2006, at which many local politicians and community leaders signed an eco charter for the town.

Speaking in advance of the Energy Fair, Mr Wishart said:

“As they say, ‘every long journey begins with a small step’- and by making a few small changes in our home and community we can significantly reduce our impact on the environment. Here in Alyth, we have seen the focus on low carbon heating systems and house insulation. This is the town which pioneered trials in the SMART meter, took part in the Electricity Reduction Challenge with SSE, and now is the pilot for the 'Street by Street Insulation Project'.

“Since the signing of Alyth’s Eco Charter 3 years ago, the awareness of climate change has grown dramatically in our society. Alyth Climate Action Town has grown and developed, now employing a part-time coordinator and 6 locally trained energy advisors. At a national level we have seen the launch of the Scottish Climate Change Bill, which looks set to lead the global effort with proposals to reduce Scottish emissions by 80% by 2050. To reach these targets, Alyth is setting an outstanding example for the rest of Scotland to follow.”
