WISHART CALLS ON COUNCILLORS TO BE BRAVE ON INCINERATOR

Perth and North Perthshire MP, Mr Pete Wishart, has today [Thursday] called on Perth and Kinross 's councillors not to gamble on the city’s future. Mr Wishart has called on councillors to vote for revocation of planning permission when the future of the Perth incinerator is considered at the council’s Development Control committee in November.

Speaking on the issue, Mr Wishart said.

“The decision about the Perth incinerator is perhaps the most critical decision that Perth and Kinross councillors will have to make. Getting it wrong may leave us with a pollutant belching monstrosity in the centre of our beautiful city, threatening all our ambitions about positioning Perth for the future.

“I know that my council colleagues desperately want rid of this proposed carbuncle, but simply voting it down without revoking the original outline planning permission will just mean that it will come back on appeal, and that appeal just may be successful.

“The planning department made a catastrophic decision by agreeing to this monstrosity in principle and it is now up to elected members to put that right. They must look carefully at any advice offered by the same officials who got us into this mess in the first place. They have to ask - what are the chances of a successful appeal and what happens if any appeal is successful?

“I know that the issue of compensation is the reason why revocation is a tough option. But what would be the cost to Perth if this incinerator was to be realised? We simply can’t gamble on our city’s future. Revocation is the stake through the heart that would kill off this monstrosity once and for all.”
