WISHART HIGHLIGHTS INTERNET SAFETY OPPORTUNITY
Mr Pete Wishart, Member of Parliament for Perth and North Perthshire, has welcomed the opportunity to recommend local schools or community groups to receive Internet Safety Awareness Presentation for Parents by trained Microsoft employees
Mr Wishart said:
”I have been contact by Microsoft about a programme they are involved in which is helping provide a secure online environment where everyone can safely enjoy the benefits provided by the Internet.
“Online communications are used and enjoyed by millions of consumers every day for positive reasons but are sadly misused by a tiny minority. The internet brings wonderful opportunities out there but there are also dangers and it is important to be aware.
”Microsoft has joined forces with the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre to help ensure children and young people know how to stay safe online through a joint volunteer outreach programme into schools.
“Microsoft employees are entitled to three days leave for volunteering in the local community and many have opted to provide Internet safety training in schools. The volunteers explain basic safety tips to school children and parents and so far have given presentations to well over 12,000 young people across the UK.
”It is incredibly important to help parents to understand the technologies their children are using and how they can help to safeguard them.
“This year, Microsoft have designed and launched a parental awareness presentation that talks about the benefits and safety concerns of the internet as well as introducing basic information on how technology such as social networking and instant messaging is used by young people.
“The presentation, which is designed to build confidence for parents in understanding the technology as well as a providing guidance and practical advice to safeguard their children and where to go for help, lasts approximately 1 hour, is delivered by a Microsoft employee specifically trained to do so and includes time for questions from the audience.
“I will be writing to local schools highlighting this scheme if there are any youth organisations or community groups out there that feel they would benefit from the parents’ presentation, I would urge them to get in touch I will contact Microsoft on their behalf.”
