LOCAL POLITICIANS WELCOME FIRST MINISTER'S SUPPORT FOR PERTH 800
Perth's parliamentarians, Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Perth and Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth and North Perthshire, have welcomed the support shown by the First Minister for the Perth 800 celebrations.
Mr Wishart said:
"As the Year of Homecoming came to a close on St Andrew's night, the First Minister passed the baton of celebration on to Perth and Kinross as we prepare for 2010 and Perth 800, a year-long series of event marking the 800th anniversary of the Charter granted to Perth in 1210.
"The First Minister's decision to mark the link the Year of Homecoming to Perth 800 in this way with the deliberate symbolism involved in using a copy of the 1210 Charter as the 'baton' is an important boost to the campaign to have Perth's city status officially recognised by the UK authorities.
"I am hosting a dinner at Westminster next week as part of this campaign and I am delighted by the boost Alex Salmond's actions have given us."
Ms Cunningham concluded:
"Perth and Kinross hosted a large number of Homecoming events during 2009 so I am really pleased that such a clear effort has been made to acknowledge the importance of Perth 800. Not just in terms of continuing the theme of celebratory events which aim to attract visitors and entertain residents, but also the clear connections with city status.
"Throughout 2009, Perth and the surrounding area will play host to a varied and enticing calendar of events which, I have no doubt, will build on and enhance the Fair City's national and international reputation as a great place to live, a profitable place to do business and a fun place to visit."
