WISHART COMMENTS ON INCINERATOR PLANNING CONSENT DECISION
LOCAL POLITICIANS COMMENT ON INCINERATOR PLANNING CONSENT DECISION
Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth and North Perthshire and Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Perth, attended today's meeting of Perth and Kinross Council's Development Control Committee at Dewars Rinks.
Following the Committee's unanimous decision to refuse the initial outline planning permission for an incinerator in Perth and instruct officers to produce a report for the full council considering revocation, Mr Wishart, who as been a vociferous opponent of the proposal, said:
"I am delighted. This was a good decision and it was the right decision.
"Congratulations to the Councillors for accepting the responsibility for putting this right, for listening to the arguments that were put forward and for calling for a report on revocation.
“The system of delegated powers meant than the original decision to award outline planning was not made by our elected representatives on the Council, but they have used the first opportunity available to them to act decisively and take official action against this absurd proposal and put it on the path to revocation.
"A huge well done to the campaigners against Grundon's proposals - particularly Bridgend, Gannochy and Kinnoull Community Council who pursued the issue so doggedly.
"I will be meeting with the Community Council at the earliest opportunity to ensure that there will be no future prospect of this monstrosity being realised in Perth city centre."
Ms Cunningham added:
"Such a huge turnout for a planning meeting shows how strongly feelings run among the local community about this planned incinerator.
"I am sure that this decision will be warmly received throughout Perthshire. Councillors have listened to the waves of public opinion and the wise counsel that has been offered.
"During the meeting I was struck by the fact that while the debate about this proposal has been raging for months in Perth, this was really the first opportunity that Councillors have had to hear a range of views in an official setting.
"There are clearly issues to be addressed within the planning system."
