WISHART WELCOMES CUT IN BINGO TAX BUT CALLS FOR UNFAIR GAP IN GAMING TAXES TO BE CLOSED

Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth and North Perthshire has welcomed the Chancellor’s pre-budget report commitment to cut bingo duty from 22 per cent to 20 per cent, while expressing disappointment that the Treasury has not listened to calls to bring Bingo taxation into line with taxation of other gaming activities.

Mr Wishart – who has raised concerns about this unfair taxation scheme – said today (Wednesday)

“Today's announcement is certainly positive news but it still does not remove the unfair discrimination that exists between bingo taxation and the way in which other gaming is taxed.

“Bingo halls perform an important social function within many of our communities and I cannot for the life of me understand why a flutter at the bookies is taxed at 15 per cent but a game of bingo is hit by an extra third.

“Bingo companies and customers are being unfairly penalised by an unfair gap in gaming taxes that should be closed.”
