LOCAL POLITICIANS PRAISE BLACK WATCH

Perth's parliamentarians, Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth and North Perthshire and Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Perth, have praised the soldiers of the Black Watch who paraded through Perth today (Saturday) to mark their homecoming from a hazardous tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Mr Wishart, who attended the parades in Perth today and in Aberfeldy on Thursday, said:

"Perthshire has a very particular bond with the Black Watch and it is entirely fitting that two of their Homecoming Parades should be in Aberfeldy and Perth. This was a great opportunity to welcome the soldiers home and to pay respect to the memory of those who will no longer march alongside their comrades.

"The routes of both marches involve passing monuments to the service and sacrifice of Black Watch soldiers in the past and today's service personnel can be assured that in carrying out their jobs they have more than lived up to the traditions and history of their famous name."

Ms Cunningham added:

"The Black Watch were callled upon to once more put their lives on the line and they did so with the professionalism and dedication which is a hallmark of the men and woman who wear the red hackle.

"I am sure that everyone in Perthshire shares the relief and delight that the soldiers are now home as well as sadness for those of their number killed or injured during this very hazardous tour of duty. Pride in a job well done is coupled with despair for a very troubled part of the world where violence and corruption continue to be a continual presence in everyday life."
