MP URGES PERTHSHIRE TO "GET WALKING"

Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth and North Perthshire has supported a motion in the House of Commons highlighting the Ramblers Association's second annual Get Walking Day, to be held on Saturday, 30 May 2009. Urging constituents to take the opportunity to get out and about, Pete said today (Wednesday):

"We are extremely fortunate here in Perthshire to be surrounded with some wonderful scenery as well as a network of paths and walks, some of which enable access to the countryside for people with a wide range of mobility issues.

"Of course, it doesn't need to be in the countryside, it doesn't need to be an all day hike, and it doesn't need to be on a specific route.

"The important thing is to get out and do it. Even taking a stroll down to the shops rather than taking the car or even the bus allows you to gain the benefit of a good walk because walking is an excellent activity which can help protect you from all sorts of illnesses and conditions.

"Well done to the Ramblers for creating this special day to highlight the importance and benefits of going for a walk and I hope that a great many of my constituents will take the opportunity of Get Walking Day to get out and about in their local area."
