WISHART BACKS NATIONAL FOOD COLLECTION

Published date : 03 December, 2012

“THANKS GO OUT TO ALL WHO TOOK PART”

This weekend the Scottish National Party’s Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth & North Perthshire visited the Tesco Metro store in Perth to give his backing to the National Food Collection campaign which Tesco are operating alongside the Trussell Trust and FareShare.

Mr Wishart thanked everyone who participated, saying:

“As the recession continues to bite, I am pleased to see a big company like Tesco getting on board with charitable organisations to give hard-pressed families a bit of a helping hand this Christmas.

“My thanks go out to all the Perthshire folk who took part and donated some of their shopping to help those worse off than themselves.

“I am pleased to say that, as well as giving shoppers the opportunity to donate to the National Food Collection through over 850 participating stores, Tesco will top up the value of all donations by 30 per cent.

“The company recently commissioned research which showed that almost one in ten people in the UK have skipped meals, gone without food, or relied on family and friends for food in the last year, and this campaign has given us all an opportunity to do our bit to help.

“Of course, one-off food drives are only a temporary measure and we need longer term political solutions to the disgrace that such levels of poverty continue to exist in such as a resource-rich country as ours.

“I know the way I want to see my country develop so that no child is born into poverty.  Meanwhile I am happy to give my backing to this effort which will make some families lives a little better this Christmas.
