WISHART WELCOMES FAIR TRADE NATION STATUS FOR SCOTLAND

Published date : 25 February, 2013

The Scottish National Party’s Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth & North Perthshire has welcomed the news that Scotland has become one of the world’s first Fair Trade Nations.

Mr Wishart said:

“This is a significant achievement for Scotland and it is fantastic to see that folk all over the country share the Scottish Government’s vision of Scotland as a good global citizen, committed to playing its part in addressing poverty – and opting to buy Fair Trade is a vital part of that.

“This status wouldn’t have been achievable without the commitment of ordinary people up and down the country who will now be toasting this success with a glass of fairtrade wine or a mug of fairtrade tea or coffee.

“Everyone who has been part of the drive towards Fair Trade status has a right to be proud of this achievement and I am particularly honoured to respresent Aberfeldy which – alongside Strathaven – was the first Fair Trade town in Scotland.

“Aberfeldy lit a torch which has been taken around the whole country and now Scotland, as one of the world’s first Fair Trade nations can be a global beacon for fairness in international trade.”
