WISHART WELCOMES COUNCIL’S MOVES TO MITIGATE IMPACT OF “INIQUITOUS” BEDROOM TAX

Published date : 18 March, 2013

The Scottish National Party’s Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth & North Perthshire has welcomed measures announced today by Perth and Kinross Council to mitigate the impact of the so-called ‘bedroom tax’ being imposed on Scotland’s vulnerable people by the Westminster Government.

Speaking today (Monday) Mr Wishart said:

“I met the welfare rights team at Perth & Kinross Council on Friday  and I know that Council Officers will be doing all that they can to support Perth & Kinross residents who are exposed to this iniquitous tax.

“The council have responded responsibly to the threat posed by this appalling change in welfare legislation and I am pleased that they are doing all they can to mitigate its impact and support residents through this.

“At the end of the day we have to remember that this is a proposal from the Conservative Government supported by the Lib Dems which is designed to hurt those most vulnerable in society.

“With independence we would be able to build a welfare system to help those in need; without it, we are forced to be resourceful in resisting the imposition of harmful policies such as this.”
