WISHART VISITS CO-OP’S BLAIRGOWRIE FARM ON OPEN FARM SUNDAY

Published date : 10 June, 2013

The Scottish National Party’s Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth & North Perthshire, paid a visit on Sunday 9th June to the Co-operative Group’s estate in Blairgowrie as part of their Open Farm Sunday event.

Speaking after the event, Mr Wishart said:

“I am delighted to have been able to support the Open Farm Sunday event at Blairgowrie which The Cooperative Farms hosted in conjunction with Linking Environment and Farming (LEAF)

“The Co-operative Group have been farming at this Co-operative owned estate since 1952 and grows strawberries, carrots, cereals, barley, rapeseed, wheat and winter barley.

“But important as the food production side of things is, there is much more that goes on here than simply growing crops.

“A special environmental scheme has led to the development of a wildflower meadow, there is a project ongoing to monitor, protect and promote the local red squirrel population and they also run the From Farm to Fork (FF2F) programme here.,

“FF2Fthis is a structured day, enabling children to visit the farm, learn about farming practices and where food comes from; then cook a healthy meal with produce from the farm and beyond.

“I had a fascinating and enjoyable time here and I am sure that each and every one of the other visitors who also took advantage of Open Farm Sunday will have got a great deal out of their visit, too.”
