WISHART HIGHLIGHTS NATIONAL LIBRARIES DAY WITH VISIT TO SCONE LIBRARY

Published date : 07 February, 2014
The Scottish National Party’s Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth & North Perthshire visited Scone Library, today (Friday) to highlight National Libraries Day.

National Libraries Day, Saturday 8 February 2014, is the culmination of a week of hundreds of events across the UK to celebrate all kinds of libraries (including public, academic and health) and the library staff working hard to promote learning, literacy and the enjoyment of reading to all.

Mr Wishart said:

“I am delighted to be able to help publicise National Libraries Day, to highlight the fantastic resource represented by our local libraries and to support the superb work done by librarians.

“Historically, libraries have had a massively important role, through extending access to information and literarure, in empowering the working classes and Scotland has a proud tradition of having been in the vanguard of the development of public lending libraries.

“As times changes and means of communicating and storing information alter, libraries have had to adapt and they have done so. In many libraries today you will encounter as many people – often far more – looking at a computer screen as you will see pulling a book from a shelf.

“Libraries are little gems in the heart of our communities and they still have an important role to play in the modern world.  It is absolutely right that we should take the time to recognise that and to celebrate the contribution they make.”
