WISHART HEARS OF HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES IN NORTH KOREA

Published date : 07 March, 2014

The Scottish National Party’s Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth & North Perthshire attended a meeting in the Houses of Parliament this week at which a Christian survivor of a North Korean prison camp spoke of the plight of Christians and others in North Korea.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Wishart said:

“A considerable number of my constituents had contacted me in advance of this meeting urging me to attend and while some of the accounts of the persecution being experienced by Christians in North Korea were very harrowing indeed, I am pleased that I did so.

We heard how Christians are imprisoned in labour camps, tortured or even killed just for owning a Bible. North Korea is an extremely closed country and as the UN prepares to publish its first ever report on human rights abuses in North Korea I hope that this is an indication that the plight of Christians and others in North Korea is now going to be exposed to a wider audience.

“What heed North Korea will pay to international criticism I do not know but we must not remain silent.”
