PETE WISHART MEETS WITH OFFICIALS TO REVIEW RESPONSE TO STORM ARWEN

Pete Wishart, MP for Perth and North Perthshire and Chair of the Scottish Affairs Committee, held a meeting on 18th January, looking at the response to the impact of Storm Arwen last November.

The virtual meeting was attended by Energy Secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, as well as officials from SSEN, Scottish Water, Aberdeenshire Council, Scottish Power Energy Networks and more.

Commenting, Mr Wishart said:

“Storm Arwen was one of the most extreme weather events in decades, which created the most extensive damage that most emergency support workers have ever had to respond to.”

“Although such a catastrophic event was bound to cause significant challenges for response teams, the extent of the delay in reconnecting the electricity supply is nonetheless unacceptable.

“With climate change set to make events of this scale more frequent, this committee meeting served the purpose of increasing our preparedness for future events by analysing the effectiveness of the co-ordinated response to Storm Arwen.

“It was an extremely productive meeting and all evidence gathered will form a report, which will be sent to Ofgem to be considered as part of its own review.”
